Julie and Brandon

"Our Blind Friends"

An activity book, published by the National Federation of the Blind of Idaho, for elementary school age children on the topic of blindness.

In 1995, the National Federation of the Blind of Idaho published an activity book that introduces sighed children to two blind children, Julie and Brandon.  This activity book contains information about telling time, an introduction to Grade I Braille, independent travel with a white cane, computers for the blind, guide dogs, recreation, and education.

There are several activities to keep any child’s interest. Matching print and Braille words, sentence completion, filling in the missing Braille letter or missing words, transcribing Braille words into print, and unscrambling words.  The activity book helps improve reading skills, and there are plenty of pictures to color.

There is a nice story by Marc Maurer, President of the National Federation of the Blind titled “Bringing Home the Christmas Tree.”  Learn more about blindness by reading the Courtesy Rules of Blindness at the end of the book.
